1/9/2023 0 Comments Evoland switch review![]() ![]() Now, there is a story in Evoland, but it isn’t a very strong one. It takes you from an 8-bit adventure to a 3D Adventure, from a turn-based battling system to real-time battles. Everything you can think of, it’s unlocked somewhere along the way. You are seeing the evolution of gaming right before your very eyes! You will unlock weapons to use, enemies to fight, a narrative to follow, even unlocking Sound FX and a soundtrack. This is how to game continues, gradually unlocking more and more. Upon opening the left box you unlock 2D Movement and just above you on the screen is another chest, unlocking this one gains you Basic Scrolling. There’s a notice on the bottom of the screen alerting you that you have the Right Key, so of course, you go to the box on the right-hand side and you unlock the Left Key. How does it do that you ask? Well, you start in a very monochrome, Game Boy Color looking forest, with 2 chests either side of you. This is a game that is exploring the history of RPG games as you play it. Completely unrelated to one another, these RPG Adventure games have so much to offer in their own nostalgic ways.Įvoland is a totally unique experience that I can guarantee you haven’t had elsewhere. Both offering very different but very compelling adventures. Everything has evolved.Įvoland Legendary Edition consists of two games, Evoland and Evoland 2. Graphics have changed, stories have changed, soundtracks have changed, everything has changed. There’s so much more we can do now that we couldn’t do before. It’s the kind of narrative that you might have expected to find from an indie title before indie developers started focusing on their narratives, but it won’t offend anyone either.Gaming has changed so much over the years. With that being said, the storytelling is quite stilted at times, and clearly not going to be in the running for storytelling awards. Each more important character that the hero encounters has a voice of their own making them feel like an actual person and not simply a copy and paste. It shows good design, and that the developers have worked hard to make all the various gameplay styles Evoland 2 represents work together as a whole, rather than feel tacked on to one another for the sole purpose of putting them in there.Įvoland 2 is the first attempt in this fledgling series to try and include a proper narrative, and it’s a solid step forward, with a sense of humour that veterans of gaming will appreciate, but will also score points with a more general audience of sci-fi and fantasy fans. What makes this feature interesting these partner abilities actually work, regardless of what genre homage the hero currently finds himself within. With this, our hero can charge up an attack that will see his chosen partner unleash a powerful ability before going into a cooldown, which resets after a couple of seconds. Not letting something like amnesia stop him, our character still knows how to swing a blade, and that amnesia serves as a convenient narrative mechanic to explain why he’s levelling up and becoming more competent and powerful as his adventure continues on.Īn interesting new feature that has been implemented is the ability to execute a partner strike. Using the action adventure format as the base template, players take control of their amnesiac character (this alone is a massive tribute!) as he heads out on a time travelling adventure. Unlike its predecessor, Evoland 2 is much more freeform in the way that it moves through the many different kinds of genres and art styles that we’ve seen over the years. It largely worked, but the sequel is even more ambitious. In it, players would move through the various eras of gameplay, with levels representing everything from games we would see on the most primitive of platforms, through to the fully nuanced worlds we get on modern hardware. The original Evoland set itself up to be something different than the normal average everyday retro throwback experience. ![]()
